OCTOBER….busy, busy, busy!

October is, for kids anyway (and probably more than one or two grown-ups), ALL about Halloween. Of course, the mini people are actually more likely to be all about the candy they will bag on October 31st.

Trick or Treating

Trick or Treating

Then again, to others, October is all about Breast Cancer and “Pink October” to raise awareness of the need to support sufferers and do all possible to raise funds to try and eliminate this horrible disease.

Lastly, October is also the time of year for Apple Orchards, Pumpkins and the glorious colors of Fall.

If we’re really honest, who DOESN’T like October for the many things that are happening this month. Whatever you do, enjoy it. Celebrate the scary stuff, support the needy campaigns and enjoy the bountiful Apple and Pumpkin harvests. Just remember to stay warm and have fun!

Most important of all! Remember the Halloween Candy Buy Back program we are running again this year.

From Friday November 1st through Friday November 15th during office hours, we will buy back unwanted (Yeah right!!!) and unwrapped candy for $1 per pound. Every donor will receive a raffle ticket for the draw to win a Family Movie Night Gift Card. All the candy will be donated to the Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor for distribution to low income residents of Washtenaw County.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October – National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October, as many of you know, has been designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, by the American Cancer Society since 1985. Their aim was to promote the use of mammograms in early detection of breast cancer. Since then, many thousands of women’s lives have been saved. This year, the American Cancer Society report that since 1990, that death rates from breast cancer have dropped by 34%. This is good, however, not good enough! We STILL need to raise awareness every passing year.

To that end, this will be a short post. All we want to do is promote Tamara Gage’s participation in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, in Ann Arbor on Saturday, 26th October. http://makingstrides.acsevents.org

Tamara Gage (on the right) – Patient of Dr David Schmidt, DDS.

Tamara is a patient of ours and is walking for Breast Cancer because;

“……….I know that I will make a difference. I know that by raising funds and walking in my Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, I will help the American Cancer Society continue to save lives from breast cancer – and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. How do they do it? Every day, the Society is helping people stay well by helping them take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early, when it is easiest to treat; helping people get well with information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of a breast cancer experience; by finding cures and promising new treatments through funding and conducting research; and by fighting back by working with lawmakers to help all women get access to screenings and care.

I believe that one day, breast cancer will never steal another year from anyone’s life – and we will live in a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. That’s why I’m walking. Not only is this my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, but it is also a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease.”

I hope that all of you reading this will support us in our support of Tamara and scan the QR code or click the link to her sponsor page and sign up.

Food Gatherers – Food Drive

Food Drive for Food Gatherers

Food Drive for Food Gatherers

This October (through November 15th) we will be collecting donations of non-perishable foods on behalf of the locally  based (Washtenaw County) Food Gatherers, for distribution to many local organizations providing well needed foods to low income families.

While they have been doing this for 25 years, we are new to this and are very proud to be helping out. We will have a Food Gatherers Barrel in the office from Tuesday October 1st through to Friday November 15th.

During October, primarily we will be looking for cans and packets of dry goods (unopened, undamaged and in date please). From November 1st we will also be happy to accept donations of your extra, unwrapped, Halloween Candy.  For donors of Candy, we will pay $1 per pound and each donor will receive a raffle ticket for a Family Movie Night gift card which can be redeemed at the Rave Cinema on Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti.

We will happily accept all donations during office hours:

Monday & Tuesday 8am ~ 5pm; Wednesday 12noon ~ 7pm & Friday 9am ~ 2pm.
