Dental Injuries


While most traumatic dental injuries occur in children and teenagers, people of all ages can be affected, however, frequently in children traumatic dental injuries often occur as a result of a sports accident,  If you’ve experienced a traumatic dental injury  (whether during sports or any other mishap) it is important to visit your dentist in order to determine any necessary treatment. Any dental injury, even if apparently mild, requires examination by a dentist immediately. Sometimes, neighboring teeth suffer an additional, unnoticed injury that will only be detected by a thorough dental exam. Please remember, not to panic, in most cases, tooth and mouth injuries are not life threatening. Rarely, a child may develop serious complications. Injuries to the teeth and mouth can also have long-lasting effects on the child’s appearance and self-confidence.

Just a few statistics for you:

  • Sporting activities cause the greatest percentage of dental traumatic injuries in teens. Pre-teens and teens have the highest number of sports related dental injuries, with the top 3 sports being; Basketball, Biking and Hockey.
  • 50% of all children and teens will suffer at least one traumatic injury to a tooth by the time they graduate high school.
  • About 80% of all dental injuries affect at least one of the front teeth. Damage to the tongue or cheek is common, too.
  • Young men suffer traumatic tooth injuries 2-3 times more often than young women.
  • About 80% of all dental injuries affect at least one of the front teeth. Damage to the tongue or cheek is common, too.

With good oral hygiene and routine dental checkups; a nutritious diet low in sugar we can usually take good care of our teeth. When children (and adults) take part in sports however, it is perhaps a good measure to wear appropriate protective gear such as a custom-made mouthguard and helmet when playing sports. If your child does complain of toothache or suffers a dental injury, make sure he or she sees your family dentist or pediatric dentist (a specialist in children’s teeth) as soon as possible. This is usually preferable to seeking care at an emergency room, as hospitals often do not have trained personnel or equipment to handle dental emergencies — unless there is a dentist or oral surgeon on call. Of course, there are times when you have no choice but to rush your child to the nearest ER.


For the next few blogs we thought we’d introduce the team at Dr Schmidt’s office so you can get to know us all a little better.  To make it easier to gather information everyone in the office was given a questionnaire with some serious and some fun questions. Hope you like the idea!!!

I was a science teacher, a fundraiser and worked as a zoo-keeper.

At Miami University (Ohio) I got my Bachelor’s Degree and I did my Masters and DDS at the University of Michigan.

In High School I loved art, science and math.

Walk my dog, hang out with my kids and eat!

Ye, I have two boys; Max is 13 and Jonah is 16.

Yes, 1 dog called Teddy. I used to have a cat, snakes and a chinchilla.

Ocean kayaking – I’m not a good swimmer.

Why do you need to clean your teeth? Here are ten pretty scary reasons why:-

  1. SAVE MONEY: Cleaning your teeth regularly will help keep bacteria at bay. Visiting your dental office every 6 months will let your dentist and hygienist examine your mouth and keep a look out for any cavities, bad bacteria and gum disease that may be developing.

  2. PREVENT GUM DISEASE: Regular brushing helps prevent gum diseases such as Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Some 80% of American Adults have some form of gum disease  so, since gum disease if often the gateway for other more serious infections, it is advisable to maintain a regular oral hygiene regime.

  3. STOP ARTHRITIS and DIABETES: If you have gum disease your are 8 times more likely to develop Rheumatoid Arthritis and infections introduced via gum disease can lower the effectiveness of insulin in your body.
  4. HAVE A BETTER SEX LIFE: Not only does a nice smile help attract the opposite sex. As Prevention magazine reports, chronic gum disease may help men avoid ED (erectile dysfunction). Studies suggest the gum disease is slightly more common  in men who had a moderate to severe level of ED, compared with men who don’t have erectile dysfunction.
  5. PROMOTE FULL-TERM HEALTHY BABIES: Women suffering from periodontal disease can pass on infection through the placenta to their unborn infants. Low weight babies and pre-term babies can also result if gum disease is present. Also, conception may be delayed in women suffering from gum disease.

  6. PREVENT HEART DISEASE AND STROKES: With all the bacteria in your mouth, the added stress of gum disease can lead to a build up of harmful bacteria in your bloodstream – which ultimately leads to your heart. In some cases the bacteria can spread to your brain and induce a stroke.

  7. WARD OFF DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S: In 2010 the New York College of Dentistry published a report showing that gum disease may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. Gum disease could also increase your chance of developing dementia by 30%-40%.
  8. REDUCE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS: The Journal of Periodontology, in 2011, showed that oral infections and diseases can raise the risk of respiratory diseases, including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Bronchitis may also be more prevalent for those with gum disease. All respiratory tract infections are caused by bacteria getting into the lower respiratory tract by passing through (or coming from) infections in your mouth. The cleaner you keep your mouth, the less chance of infection getting through.
  9. EAT HEALTHY: Eating calcium and fiber rich foods will help contribute to your overall health. It also stimulates production of saliva which helps to protect your teeth. Although brushing twice a day is recommended, additional brushing of your teeth after a meal can help you avoid eating more than you need as brushing signals to your brain that you are full.

  10. KEEPING THAT BEAUTIFUL SMILE: Cleaning your teeth regularly helps keep your mouth fresh, bad bacteria at bay, your smile white and in general a happier and more attractive person.

SO!!! I guess we can safely say that cleaning your teeth should part of your daily oral hygiene routine!

How should you clean your teeth?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommend that you clean your teeth at least twice a day, with a soft bristled toothbrush. They also recommend that you clean between your teeth with floss or an interdental cleaner. The type of toothpaste you use can vary as there are many varieties that address different problems, however as long as you ensure that the toothpaste you use has the ADA seal of approval you should be OK.

While most of us do a fairly good job of cleaning our teeth, even the really good jobs sometimes need extra help. This is why the ADA recommend that we visit our dental office at least twice a year for check-ups and a professional tooth cleaning performed by the hygienist. For people who develop gum disease, it may be necessary to visit the hygienist more frequently or even be referred to a Periodontist – a specialist in gum disease.

You should………..though unfortunately, many of us don’t. If anything, we fear them, which is really unfortunate as our dentists help us with the very thing that helps us get noticed….our smiles!!!!



Your dentist can help fix your smile for you and give you the confidence to go out and meet the world head on!!!

There are several reasons why you should love your dentist, and make regular trips to see him (or her);

A) During your check-up, your dentist will check for signs of oral cancer. He will also check for gum disease which is especially important to treat as it can affect your heart, blood sugar, memory and breathing. Effectively, your dentist can, in some cases, give you a very important heads up to other health conditions you may not know you have. (

B) Your dentist knows how to fix your teeth!! Among other things, he can take x-rays, look for cavities you can’t see and fill them. He can straighten crooked teeth. He can help you with bad breath and he and his team can clean and polish your teeth.

C) Your dentist cares about your teeth and will help you when you’re in pain. They will even see you out of hours if necessary and are usually (as is the case with Dr Schmidt) available by phone whenever you need them.

D) Your dentist prefers to see you on a regular basis though, so that he can help you avoid needing treatment. By having regular checkups he and his hygienist can spot minor ailments before they blow up into instances that need major work. In some cases your dentist can put sealants on teeth to avoid cavities. Your hygienist will help you by advising you how to care for your teeth at home between visits, reminding you to floss and brush regularly.

E) Modern dentists have new ways to treat you. They can do implants as well as crowns. Hygienists use sonic brushes to cleans your teeth, they can whiten your teeth so your smile is brilliantly welcoming. The dentist’s chair is now a place to relax with calming decor, music playing. If you’re still nervous, we can offer Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) to relax you. The modern dental office is a great place to get your teeth checked.

F) Your dentist will have had a long thorough education in order to be able to care for your oral health. His education will have included College, Dental School, Dental Admissions Testing, State Licensing, National Dental Board Exams, Continuing Education and in some instances further specialist training.

G) You get a free tooth brush, floss and toothpaste every time you have a check up!!

Thumb Sucking

Sucking is a natural reflex and infants and young children may use thumbs, fingers, pacifiers and other objects on which to suck. It may make them feel secure and happy, or provide a sense of security at difficult periods. Since thumb sucking is relaxing, it may induce sleep.

Thumb sucking that persists beyond the eruption of the permanent teeth can cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and tooth alignment. How intensely a child sucks on fingers or thumbs will determine whether or not dental problems may result. Children who rest their thumbs passively in their mouths are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs.

Children should cease thumb sucking by the time their permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. Usually, children stop between the ages of two and four. Peer pressure causes many school-aged children to stop.

Pacifiers are no substitute for thumb sucking. They can affect the teeth essentially the same way as sucking fingers and thumbs. However, use of the pacifier can be controlled and modified more easily than the thumb or finger habit. If you have concerns about thumb sucking or use of a pacifier, consult your pediatric dentist.

A few suggestions to help your child get through thumb sucking:

Children often suck their thumbs when feeling insecure. Focus on correcting the cause of anxiety, instead of the thumb sucking.

Children who are sucking for comfort will feel less of a need when their parents provide comfort.

Reward children when they refrain from sucking during difficult periods, such as when being separated from their parents.

Your pediatric dentist can encourage children to stop sucking and explain what could happen if they continue. If these approaches don’t work, remind the children of their habit by bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at night. Your pediatric dentist may recommend the use of a mouth appliance.

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Every hygienist will tell you to Floss, Floss, Floss!!! Why?!?!? Flossing is one way of caring for your teeth. It starts where brushing stops as it reaches the parts that your brush can’t. Over time, micro-organisms (bacteria, micro-parasties and viruses) can build up to form dental plaque. If left alone, it can cause inflammation and redness of the gums. This is the first step in gum disease, known as Gingivitis. So……that is one reason why you should floss daily. If you don’t take care of gingivitis, it may possibly develop into the more serious condition known as periodontitis.

So, be good to your teeth and floss….work for the Gold Medal Smile 🙂

We decided to vote for the favorite cookie and the Office Christmas Cookie Contest WINNER was our hygienist Susan B. with the Candy Cane Snowballs.

We thought you all would like to have the winning cookie recipe.

Candy Cane Snowball Recipe

 You will need:

 2 cups of butter, softened      

1 cup confectioner’s sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 cup chopped pecans

8oz white candy coating, coarsely chopped

1/3 to 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy

 1. In a large bowl, cream butter and confectioner’s sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Gradually add flour and mix well. Stir in pecans. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours or until easy to handle.

 2. Roll into 1in balls. Place 2in apart on un-greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove cookies to wire rack and let them cool.

 3. In a microwave, melt candy coating at 70% power for 1 minute and stir. Microwave at additional 10 – 20 second intervals, stirring until smooth.

 4. Dip the top of each cookie into the candy coating; allow excess to drip off. Then dip into crushed peppermint candy. Place on waxed paper and let them set.

Don’t Believe Everything You Hear!

Here’s an interesting quiz for you.

We all know it’s true (or do we???) – so when and where do you think that bit of advice originated?

Believe it or not, if you guessed “d” you are correct!

Most of us know the famous order to “see your dentist twice a year.” Some insurance companies even use that interval to define their standards for payment. But the fact is that phrase was developed with no scientific basis at all – and to sell toothpaste!

Another example of this logic was the ad campaign for Pear’s Soap in the late 1800s. The slogan “Have you used Pear’s soap today” ushered in the habit of daily bathing! And while that was certainly a good thing, the fact is that we are all different and to expect that everyone requires the same schedule for their health needs just does not make sense.

When you wash your hair, do you “rinse and repeat?” Do you associate diamonds with engagement rings? Are you convinced that Volvo builds the safest cars? If so, you have been influenced by advertising, not necessarily facts. Don’t worry – we are all guilty of it!

At our office, we don’t believe in a cookie cutter approach when your health is involved. In order to determine the correct dental treatment for you (including how often you should have your teeth cleaned) we perform a thorough examination, checking your teeth, gums, medical history, bite, jaw muscles and more. We even do an oral cancer screening at every check-up.

Everyone is different, so despite what the ad men from Pepsodent once said, let’s scientifically determine the correct schedule for your dental visits by looking at the facts, not an ad slogan. Then you can look forward to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums – and keep smiling forever!

The Most Confusing Aisle In The Store?

If you have been shopping for toothpaste lately, you know that it can be very confusing.

Unlike the old days when the choices were few, these days it seems that there are way too many options! Whitening toothpastes, tartar control, paste or gel, gum health, desensitizing, – which is best? This is a question we get asked all the time. Sometimes it seems like the best thing to do would be to forget the labels and buy whatever is on sale!!

The fact is – buying a particular type or brand of toothpaste is usually not as important as the way you brush and how often you do so. But in any case, here is a quick run-down.

Tartar control toothpaste:  Tartar is calcified plaque which naturally forms and can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. While tartar control toothpaste has been shown to reduce the formation of new deposits, it can’t remove current ones and does nothing to prevent these formations where they are the most dangerous – underneath the gum line.

Paste vs. gel: No significant difference here; it’s more of a personal preference.

Desensitizing toothpaste:  These pastes have ingredients in them which block the small tube-like channels that connect to the nerve tissue inside of your teeth. If you have exposed roots due to gum recession or teeth that are generally sensitive to hot and cold, this may be a good solution for you. But please be patient – it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the magic to kick in. If you experience sensitivity that prevents you from enjoying your favorite cold/hot beverages & foods – please talk to us we can help.

Whitening pastes:  The abrasiveness of these products may reduce surface stains, but they do little to treat the actual yellowing of teeth from the inside. The good news is that most teeth can be whitened with the right treatment. Be sure to ask us what the proper whitening method is for you.

“Gum Care” toothpaste: Studies have shown these to be questionable at best, and they may not be as valuable as standard toothpastes in preventing cavities.

Expensive or bargain brand? The good news here is that price doesn’t seem to be related to effectiveness when choosing a toothpaste. As a matter of fact, recently Consumer Reports magazine rated an expensive paste near the bottom of their list with bargain basement Ultra-Brite near the top in several categories!

So which brand should I use?

Most studies are fairly inconclusive on this one. Your best bet is always a brand that contains fluoride and has the American Dental Association seal of approval. And if that brand happens to be on sale – all the better!!

In the end, the most important thing is to brush often (morning, night-time, and after every meal), use a soft brush, try to reach every surface of every tooth, and spend two minutes doing so.
